Had she chosen her location for city
clean up purposes carefully on last
Saturday, acting City Mayor Mary Broh
would still be in love with the Liberian
Muslims community. However, that was not
the case and she has fallen out of love
with the community which is asking for
her dismissal.
In
Liberia and elsewhere,
Mary Broh’s act of vandalism has sparked massive outcry
among Muslims who are outrage at her insensitivity and
arrogance in executing her so-called clean up exercise.
Her target for the cleanup bid was the Benson Street
mosque, where praying Muslims were breaking fast during
this holy month of Ramadan.
FELMAUSA, LIMANY and other notable organizations as well
as individual Liberians, both Muslims and non Muslims
have condemned the act and asked President Ellen Johnson
Sirleaf to kick Mary Broh out of her government.
Madam Broh, until recently has fallen out of love with
most Liberians, especially the marketers who have been
victimized by her act of vandalism in the name of
"cleaning up" the city.
The New York resident and close friend to the Liberian
leader has set fire on market stalls in parts
of Monrovia, in which thousands of dollars worth of
goods have been destroyed. All in the name of "cleaning
up" Monrovia.
On Saturday last week, Madam Broh sought her target, the
Benson Street mosque and led a band of unruly uniformed
officers to vandalized and disrupt Ramadan activities at
the mosque. Madam Broh has angered Muslims who are not
only calling for her immediate dismissal by President
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, but that she must be prosecuted
for act of vandalism against Liberian she claimed to be
serving.
In fact reports from Liberia indicate that had it not
been for prominent Muslim leader, Sheikh Kafumba Konneh,
who intervened and calmed angry Muslims at the Benson
Street mosque Tuesday, the Liberian Government would be
having a serious situation to deal with.
A press release from the Forum for the Advancement of
Liberian Mandingoes & their Descendants (FALMD) said the
presence of Sheikh Kafumba Konneh, who is Chairman of
the National Muslim Council of Liberia immensely helped
in putting a situation under control.
Sheikh Konneh admonished the angry young Muslims that
violence was not Islamic and despite the gross wrong
that has been instituted against them they should
peacefully pursue their rights through legal and
legitimate means that will in no way undermine the peace
and tranquility that Liberia is currently experiencing.
FALMD, NAMSAL visit Benson Street Mosque to demonstrate
unflinching solidarity with Muslims, quell off looming
street protest
The Forum and the National Muslim Student Association of
Liberia (NAMSAL) on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 paid a
courtesy and solidarity call on the Chief Imam and other
officials of the Benson Street Mosque to assure them of
their support in the wake of the unwarranted attack
against the Muslim community by the Monrovia Acting City
Mayor General Mary Broh.
The visit which was also characterized by the huge
attendance of both institutions’ membership almost
turned into a protest march in the streets of Monrovia
when many of the attendants having gotten the actual
story from Mosque officials became emotionally charged
and wanted to march to the Liberian Presidency and
Legislature for immediate redress.
Sheikh Konneh saved the day.
Other speakers who took similar lines in admonishing the
crowd to remain peaceful and law-abiding while the
National Muslim Council, Imam Council and faith-based
organizations brainstorm as to the way forward.
The Acting Chairman of the newly organized Forum for the
Advancement of Liberian Mandingoes and their Descendants
also spoke to the press at which time he warned Mary
Broh to stop her continuous aggression against Liberian
Muslims all else they as an organization will institute
response measures that would incapacitate the Acting
City Mayor from harassing peaceful Muslims as her
actions and utterances directed at Muslims were becoming
unbearable and the community will no longer tolerate any
attack from her.
'No one better than the other' - Broh, Muslims Smoke
Peace Pipe
Meanwhile, reports reaching FELMAUSA News suggest the
embattled Liberian official, Madam Mary Broh met with
Muslim leaders during a visit to the Benson Street
mosque where she led unruly officers to vandalized and
disrupted activities marking the holy month of Ramadan.
Madam Broh, reports say was late Tuesday night
accompanied by her friend, President Sirleaf in a bid to
make amends for last Saturday’s rowdiness.
The President again expressed regrets for the
inconveniences worshippers may have experienced during
the clean up exercise by the Force. An Executive Manson
release says the President reminded the Muslim community
that Liberia belongs to everyone. There is no one
person, group, religion or party that is better than the
other,” she assured Liberian Muslims.
The President observed that there may be incidence
sometimes, that may be unfortunate and lead to tension,
“but as leaders, we must find a way to subdue it and go
beyond the event in the interest of unity and peace in
Liberia.”
President Johnson Sirleaf said her visit to the Mosque
was intended to reinforce the message and reconfirm her
Government’s commitment to the promotion of peace and
unity in the country.
Broh, assured the Muslim leaders of more consultation
between her office and heads of various groups before
enforcing city ordinance in any community. Sheik Kafumba
Konneh, in response, welcomed the visit by the
President, describing it as a true manifestation of a
true leader. The visit, Sheik Konneh said, is a
testimony of the Liberian leader’s commitment to the
promotion of peace, security, happiness and unity among
Liberians.
He accepted the President’s apology on behalf of the
Muslim Community, promising that the Community and
Muslim leaders will cooperate with authorities of the
Monrovia City Corporation to ensure that the city
remains cleaned.
The visit by the President to the Mosque followed a
meeting Sunday between the leadership of the Muslim
Community and the Liberian leader, following concerns
over the reported stand-off Saturday between residents
of the Benson Street community and the Special President
Task Force during a routine clean up exercise.
The Force has since been dissolved by the President, on
grounds that it is no longer necessary, now that the
City Corporation has put in place a structure to carry
out the functions for which the Task Force was set up.
All eyes fixed directly on the Benson Street Mosque
throughout Tuesday saw no sign of Broh and her team. All
that could be seen taking place at the mosque Tuesday
was a mass meeting of Muslims. The head of the mosque
told FPA via cell phone that the meeting was intended to
discuss the next course of action against Broh while the
occasion was at the same time being used to calm the
tensions among Muslims down.
