News reports reaching FELMAUSA News service suggest one
of the Presidential candidates is seriouslly seeking the
release from further detention of former LURD leader
Sekou Damante Conneh.
According to a communication from the Mohammed Dukuly
campaign, the candidate warns that at the time when
Liberian peace is still fragile, any attempt to arrest
and detail warlords would jeopardize regional security.
The communication dated July 2, 2009 and signed by
Dukuly’s communication director Mohamed A. Kamara notes
that the Dukuly’s camp has received reports that the
standard-bearer of PRODEM and former head of LURD, Mr.
Sekou Damate Conneh, is being detained by the Guinean
authority for security reasons.
“In pursuit of long lasting peace and stability in the
sub-region and also in demonstration of the core mandate
of ECOWAS, Hon. Dukuly requests the intervention of the
Liberian government through Madame Ellen John-Sirleaf,
with support from ECOWAS, United Nations and The African
Union in the immediate release of Mr. Conneh,” the
communication says.
The Dukuly’s camp says the Guineans and the
International community must recall that the Liberian
Mandingoes have played vital roles in providing security
to the territorial limitations of the Republic of Guinea
and its population.
Almost a decade ago, Mr. Conneh led a revolution which
saved the Republic of Guinea from the hands of Mr.
Charles Taylor and at such a crucial moment of a fragile
peace in Liberia, any attempt to detain or imprison any
warlords might jeopardize regional stability.
The sub-region has suffered immensely from violent
situations and in my capacity as a presidential aspirant
for FELMAUSA, I encourage all Mandingoes back in Liberia
and refugee camps to engage the International community
peacefully in the immediate release of Mr. Sekou Damate
Conneh. |
